  4. THE TRUTH ABOUT MARRIAGE:  THE TRUTH ABOUT DIVORCE.

  6. 1980.....Family  households  maintained by a woman with no
  7. husband  present comprise 11% of all households - a 46% increase
  8. since 1970.
  9.  
  10. ...One in seven families have no father in the home.
  11. Divorces ... 1870 ... 1 divorce in every 34 marriages.
  12. Divorces ... 1920 ... 1 divorce in every  7 marriages.
  13. Divorces ... 1940 ... 1 divorce in every  6 marriages.
  14. Divorces ... 1960 ... 1 divorce in every  4 marriages.
  15. Divorces ... 1972 ... 1 divorce in every  3 marriages.
  16. Divorces ... 1977 ... 1 divorce in every  2 marriages.
  17.  
  18. Russia's  divorce rate in 1978 - 1 in 3.   That's a country  with
  19. 170 eligible women for every 100 eligible men!

  21. Matthew 24:37-39
  22. "For  the  coming  of the Son of Man will be just like the  days
  23. of Noah.  For as in those days which were before the flood they
  24. were eating  and  drinking,  they were marrying and giving  in
  25. marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did
  26. not understand until the flood came and took them all away;  so
  27. shall the coming of the Son of Man be."
  28.  
  29. AND LOOK AT THESE FACTS ON FAMILY LIFE:
  30. ...One  in three children between the ages of six and seventeen
  31.      today live with just one parent.
  32. ...One in four pregnancies ends in abortion throughout the world
  33.      each year - 30 million 'legal' abortions.
  34. ...Nowadays,  a family is a group of people who have keys to the
  35.      same house!
  36. ...Our  understanding  of how to live with one another is  still
  37.      far behind our knowledge of how to destroy one another.
  38.  
  39. QUITTING ON MARRIAGE
  40.  
  41. Sociologist,  Dr.  David Mace says,  "Since women have
  42. assertiveness, independence  and  personhood,  men no longer feel
  43. the  compulsion to provide for them.  The new attitude is, "If I
  44. walk out on my wife, she is quite capable to taking care of
  45. herself."
  46.  
  47. THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMORALITY.
  48.  
  49. Immorality  is a sin not only against the human body,  but
  50. against the Body of Christ...and it is a terribly contagious sin.
  51. 1 Corinthians 6:18  says,  "Flee immorality."  Every other sin
  52. that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man SINS
  53. AGAINST HIS OWN BODY."  The Body  of Christ is being splintered,
  54. and often rendered  ineffective, because of rampant divorce
  55. within the church.

  57. BASE YOUR MARRIAGE ON GOD'S WORD.
  58.  
  59. Matthew 7:24-27
  60. "Therefore  everyone  who hears these words of mine,  and acts
  61. upon them,  may be compared to the wise man, who built his house
  62. upon the rock.   And the rain descended and the floods came and
  63. burst against that house;  and kyet it did not fall,  for it had
  64. begn founded upon the rock.   And everyone who hears these words
  65. of mine, and does not act upon them,  will be a foolish man,  who
  66. built his house upon the sand.   And the rain descended, and the
  67. winds blew and burst against that house; and it fell, and great
  68. was its fall."

  70. The above passage of Scripture tells us:
  71.  
  72.      1. There will be storms.   Storms cause us to go back to the
  73.      Book  and get God's answers for ending the storm.
  74.  
  75.      2. The  result  of your home is your decision - reached by
  76.      whether or not you have your home built on doing what the
  77.      Word of God says to do - ACTING UPON THE WORD.
  78.  
  79.      3. Hearing  the Word of God without acting upon it will not
  80.      cause your home  to stand.   The value of the Bible doesn't
  81.      consist merely in knowing it, but in living it.

  83. TRIAL MARRIAGES
  84.  
  85. God condemns trial marriages not only because of the immorality
  86. involved, but because He knows the wretched hurt that comes when
  87. one selfish partner in such a lifestyle sees the trial as a
  88. miserable failure  - while the other partner thinks the trial
  89. is a success. Terrible heartbreak in such a situation is the
  90. inevitable result for someone when the other person walks out.

  92. THE TRUTH ABOUT MARRIAGE.
  93.  
  94. THREE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY INGREDIENTS FOR ANY MARRIAGE:  LOVE,
  95. TRUST AND RESPONSIBILITY
  96.  
  97. 1.  LOVE:
  98.  
  99. A husband is to agape his wife...Eph.5:25. AGAPE = WILL TO LOVE
  100. "Agape"  alove means choosing to do the highest good for the
  101. wife in  spite of her response.  It's a love that gives and gives
  102. and gives  without requiring something back.
  103.  
  104. The association of the word "philandros",  describing the love  a
  105. wife  must  have  for  her husband,  finds its root  in  the
  106. word "phileo" because it describes a kinsman relationship.
  107. Because 1 Corinthians 13,  1 John and other places in the New
  108. Testament call upon  all Christians to love with "agape" love -
  109. the wife is  also  to  obviously "agape" her husband too.
  110.  
  111. 2.  TRUST:
  112. The second absolutely essential ingredient for a merger.   If
  113. you can't trust your mate, trust God with your mate.
  114.  
  115. 3.  RESPONSIBILITY:
  116. The third absolutely essential ingredient for a merger. There can
  117. be NO excuse for not being a responsible mate.  Success in
  118. marriage is more than FINDING the right person - it's a matter
  119. of BEING the right person!
  120.  
  121. A good question to ask yourself is,  "If I were my mate,  would I
  122. like being married to me?"  If not - CHANGE!
  123.  
  124. GOD HAS THREE VIEWPOINTS TOWARD DIVORCE.
  125.  
  126. 1. A viewpoint toward two unsaved persons married to each other.
  127. 2. A viewpoint toward a believer married to an unbeliever.
  128. 3. Christian marriage - two that He has put together.
  129.  
  130. FIRST, GOD SAYS NOTHING TO THE UNSAVED COUPLE ABOUT DIVORCE.
  131.  
  132. The Bible simply doesn't recognize the world in the same light as
  133. it's own.
  134.  
  135. There  are  the children of darkness living in the "Kingdom of
  136. Darkness"  and the children of the day "who have been translated
  137. into the  "Kingdom  of Light" Col.1:13.
  138.  
  139. Lost people act lost.  How long will it take the church to
  140. realize that Christians  are the only ones who can live the
  141. Christian life? (John 15:4-5).
  142.  
  143. The Bible has only two things to say to the heathlen (unsaved
  144. people).
  145.  
  146. 1. God loves you (John 3:16)
  147. 2. God  sent  His  only begotten Son into this world to  save
  148. you IF you'll repent and be saved (John 5:24; 2 Peter 3:9)
  149.  
  150. SECOND:   GOD'S WORD DOES SPEAK TO THE CHRISTIAN MARRIED TO AN
  151. UNSAVED MATE - FIRST AND FOREMOST, GOD SAYS, "DON'T DO IT!!!"
  152.  
  153. 2 Corinthians 6:14
  154. "Do  not  be bound together with unbelievers;  for what
  155. partnership have  righteousness and lawlessness,  or what
  156. fellowship has light with darkness?"
  157.  
  158. The answer is obvious - "Name!!!"
  159.  
  160. A Christian marrying an unsaved person is entering a forbidden
  161. marriage and complete sin. 1 Corinthians 7:12-13
  162. "But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a
  163. wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, let
  164. him not send her away. And a woman who has an unbelieving
  165. husband,  and he consents to live with her, let her not send her
  166. husband away."
  167.  
  168. So, Jesus taught on divorce between people who both called
  169. themselves people of God.  Paul taught on a believer being
  170. married to an unbeliever.
  171.  
  172. THEREFORE:
  173.  
  174. 1. The believer is to allow the unbeliever to live with him or
  175. her if the unbeliever wants to do so.  There's no rejection of
  176. the unbeliever as a mate.  That is, the Christian wife is to
  177. submit to her husband whether he is a believer or not (1
  178. Pet.3:1-6),  and the Christian  husband  is to lovingly lead his
  179. wife whether she is a believer or not (Ephesians 5:25-33).
  180.  
  181. 2. However, if the unbeliever wants to leave the  believer,  the
  182. believer is to "let the unbeliever go".
  183.  
  184. 1 Corinthians 7:14-15
  185. "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and
  186. the unbelieving  wife is sanctified through her believing
  187. husband;  for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they
  188. are holy.  Yet, if the unbelieving leaves,  let him leave; the
  189. brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God
  190. has called us to peace."
  191.  
  192. THIRD, GOD'S WORD SPEAKS TO CHRISTIANS MARRIED TO EACH OTHER,
  193. There is only one ground Christ ever gave two people calling
  194. themselves "Christians" to divorce - Matthew 5:31-32,  "And  it
  195. was said,  "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a
  196. certificate of dismissal; but I say to you that every one who
  197. divorces his wife, except for the cause of unchastity  (porneia),
  198. makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman
  199. commits adultery."

  201. "PORNEIA" - THE DESTROYER OF MARRIAGE
  202.  
  203. "Porneia" is the ugly Greek word that gets variously translated
  204. in our English New Testaments by the words "unchastity",
  205. "adultery" or "fornication".  None of these English words
  206. adequately describe "porneia".  "Porneia" is a Greek word that
  207. comes from an ancient root  meaning "to sell" and it was used of
  208. selling slaves for the purpose of prostitution.
  209.  
  210. "porneia" includes  an attitude.   We get our English words
  211. "pornography",  "pornographic",  or  "porno" from this wretched
  212. Greek word."Porneia" embraces  every kind of perverted sex sin
  213. that's  possible. It represents an immoral mind.
  214.  
  215. Jesus  clearly said that "porneia" is total grounds for  divorce.
  216. If God  gives such a person over to their lusts (Rom.1:28), He
  217. doesn't expect the true believer not to give them up also.
